Growing Lion Cubs

One of our two new female lion cubs (Dandelion or Marigold) was looking straight at me as I arrived, alone, at the overlook about 11 a.m. this morning. Sister and mother were snoozing behind her. She and her sister had grown since I last saw them, as I expected. They are now one-third-scale versions of Mom.

After a time, she decided I was not interesting enough and went for a large, red plastic spool (the size of a nice child's stool). She rolled it about, stood it on end and, when it fell back down, woke Mom, who gave me a glare as if I had threatened one of her young ones.

Soon the sister was awake and they were rolling and wrestling and pawing at one another.

A blue jay vocalized and flew from behind me into the exhibit and back again. As that went on I noticed a squirrel in the lion habitat's large tree. The squirrel did look to me to be cautious about going any further down the tree and entering the territory of three African predators.

Come soon. They are getting more and more mature. Before the season is over, they will be too big to share the exhibit with our other adults and it will be time for them to move on to another good home.

When I read things like this--I always want to love on the animals involved. I know that I am being ridiculous--as these are wild animals.

Perhaps God put this kind of feeling in all of us so that we would love all of His Creation.

On my last visit in December I really enjoyed the duo. I had my camera along and created a photo gallery telling about their after afternoon play for my grandson to enjoy. Here is its location. I can't imagine how fast they have grown. http://www.moka.smugmug.com/gallery/342371

Thanks for sharing Sue Bob and Moka. Wonderful series of photos, Moka. Believe I'll reference your gallery in an upcoming post, unless you ask that I don't.
