Young Patron

Madison Benfield of Winston-Salem brought an envelope to the NC Zoo yesterday and presented it to me in front of our Director's Guild, life members.

The envelope contained checks and this note:

"My name is Madison Benfield. I really love animals and for my 7th birthday I asked my parents [Sally H. and Brian H. Benfield] if I could have a petting zoo party at my house. I wanted to share my love of animals with my friends..."

"Instead of presents, I asked my friends to make a donation to the animals at the NC Zoo...I love going to the Zoo...The pink flamingos are my favorite! When I opened my birthday cards, I counted all the checks and cash...[over $300] I hope [most of it] can go to the flamingos."

The picture is of Madison and me. I am honored to be in a photo with this fine young lady.

Russ,
Madison is indeed a fine young lady.
It is really extraordinary that she she would devote her 7th birthday celebration to donate her presents to the NC Zoo for its animals. If only there were more such people.

Right you are, Bob. I've seen it a couple times before in ones about as young, but it is rare and special.

What a wonderful gesture indeed! I commend her parents as well for supporting her love of animals and her birthday wishes. As a volunteer at the chimpanzee exhibit, I always thank young people (and their elders) when they shove a dollar into the contribution box. Oftentimes, they're donating their souvenir money! Remember every individual can make a difference. Thank you Madison and to all who contribute.
