Acupuncture for Monkeys
From a North Carolina Zoo media advisory today to reporters and assignment editors:
"In a continuing effort to test alternative forms of medical care for the exotic animals at the North Carolina Zoo, a certified Veterinary Acupuncturist will be at the zoo’s Hanes Veterinary Medical Center on Monday, October 1, to treat two aging Patas monkeys, a species of African plains monkey, for osteoarthritis."
NC Zoo lead vet Dr. Mike Loomis told me he has seen an impressive demonstration of acupuncture's effect on an animal in pain.
