Speaking of SHWP
Speaking of being at Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park Friday...turns out this talented blogger/photographer was too. (Note the great slide show at the end and link to "first visited" to find another SHWP slide show, from an August visit.)
This blogger just happened to arrive for the groundbreaking we had scheduled for Phase II of the Waterfowl Park and its featured handicapped-accessible tree house!

I wondered why interest in my Sylvan Heights post increased overnight. Thank you for your kind post and the link. We were pleased to have attended the event.
And in case you're wondering, the NC Zoo is on our list of places to explore. We've been focusing on the coastal plains since our move to the Tar Heel State, but it's time to investigate what the Piedmont has to offer. Members of our hiking group have mentioned the NC Zoo several times, and those who have visited, loved it. We hope to follow their footsteps sometime this spring.
On another note, credit for many of the photos you see on my blog goes to my husband, who can capture moving critters better than I can. I've no doubt he'll do a terrific job at the zoo.
Thanks again for mentioning my post in your blog.
Thank you (and thanks to your husband) for a wonderful blog.
Have you heard about hiking the Birkhead Wilderness near the Zoo?
I'm unfamiliar with the Birkhead Wilderness. I checked one of my books and see that it's in the Uwharries. We'd hoped to include that destination in our outing to Asheboro, so thank you for drawing my attention to it.
If you want to get right into the wilderness go to the Robbins Branch trail head: http://www.northcarolinaoutdoors.com/places/piedmont/birkhead.html
If you have more time and want a more varied hike, start at Thornburg Farm trail head. After a couple miles you will be in the wilderness.
Thank you, this is very helpful.
