Scouts Feed Giraffes & Zoo Society Kitty

Girl Scout Troup 083, Winston-Salem, went behind the scenes at the NC Zoo recently and came face-to-face with the zoo’s newest celebrities — two 11-month-old giraffes.

After an off-exhibit tour during which they fed twigs and leaves to all five of the zoo’s giraffes, the girls pushed up their sleeves and got down to the real business that brought them into the barn — an hour-long session of cleaning the giraffe stalls.

The troop also raised $1,000 that was given as a donation to the N.C. Zoo Society's kitty. The donation will be used for the care of Zoo giraffes. A feeding station where visitors can purchase browse materials (leaves and twigs) that can be hand-fed to the giraffes will open as soon as the giraffes are comfortable with visitors. The Zoo Society is also raising money to improve the giraffe barn. The zoo’s oldest, it opened in 1979. (Shortened from recent NC Zoo media release.)

Well congratulations to a wonderful Girl Scout Troop! That is fabulous! We would all be better off if more people cared like this!
