Some Like It Hot III

Was at Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park, Scotland Neck, Monday for a Board meeting and did an early tour of the great exhibits before it got too hot.

Talked to Ali Lubbock, of the Sylvan Heights family, Friday. It was 103 degree F! Yet some folks showed up that afternoon to go through the six-acre corn maze!

Ann and I used our NC Zoo Society life member card to make a reciprocal visit to the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores Thursday.

Big fan of their outdoor, all-natural Marsh Boardwalk, Egret Point Overlook, Bogue Sound Overlook and Alice Hoffman Nature Trail. (All showing off the natural setting into which the Aquarium has been placed.)

Like the changes inside too (including the great gift shop).

Zoo Squirrels & Snails!

Doesn't sound like a reason to go to the Phoenix Zoo? Well, add to that the facts that they are not on exhibit and the snails are the size of poppy seeds at fully grown!

But good for the Zoo! They are protecting rare Mount Graham red squirrels and springsnails from potential devastation by fire.

How Appropriate!

Noticed that the prior article, which came to me today by way of a daily Google search for "zoo" articles, said the Kids' Farm (at National Zoo) would probably have named a sponsor yesterday.

Did my own Google search and found that that sponsor of the Kids' Farm is. appropriately, State Farm, the insurance company.

Becca on Zoo Keeper Week

"Hello,

"Just wanted to make everyone aware that July 17-23 is National Zoo Keeper Week.

"“The American Association of Zookeepers is excited to announce National Zoo Keeper Week,” said Shane Good, President of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, Inc. “This national celebration is in recognition of Zoo keepers, aquarists, and the animal care professionals in our nation's zoological parks and aquariums. Zookeepers serve as animal care experts, front line educators, and conservationists. We are proud to have zookeepers recognized for the important work they do on behalf of wildlife and conservation.”

"Created by AAZK, Inc, National Zoo Keeper Week is celebrated each year beginning on the third Sunday in July. During the week, zoos nationwide honor animal care professionals and the work they do in animal care, conservation, and education. There are approximately 6,000 animal care professionals in the United States.

"To help increase public awareness about the need to preserve our precious habitats and the animals which inhabit them and to recognize the roles that zookeepers play in animal conservation and education, the American Association of Zoo Keepers invites zoos, aquariums, and their guests to participate in National Zoo Keeper Week.

"The American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK)a non-profit volunteer organization made up of professional zookeepers and other interested persons dedicated to professional animal care and conservation. The mission of AAZK is to advance excellence in the zoo keeping profession, foster effective communication beneficial to animal care, support deserving conservation projects, and promote the preservation of our natural resources and animal life. For more information, visit www.aazk.org."

"Most Dangerous Bird" Escapes

A cassowary escaped within the Denver Zoo, prompting the closure of that area of the park, as it refers to the big, flightless avian as the "World's Most Dangerous Bird". [Video at link]

It is the third tallest and second heaviest bird species.

The frightened, 60-pound bird was rather easily captured, it appears.

Note: The 1958 book "Living Birds of the World", by ornithologist Thomas E. Gilliard, claims: "The inner or second of the three toes is fitted with a long, straight, murderous nail which can sever an arm or eviscerate an abdomen with ease. There are many records of natives being killed by this bird." The book, however, did not include records or references for these alleged deaths and, I understand, recent research has only been able to verify one human death, way back in 1926.

Zoo Director re: "Elephant Bees"

"Remember trying the more conventional methods in this area 25 years ago. Success will depend on honey sales though, because the hives probably cost a fair amount to build in the density they need them. There is though an existing honey export market from East Africa, especially Tanzania, so maybe they can tap into that." [NC Zoo Director David M. Jones on the Wired Science article on beehive fences keeping African elephants away from trouble]

Lot of attention (AP and HUFFPOST Green) yesterday to Columbus Zoo's "tricking" of birds (flamingos) with "fake eggs".

Seems I remember (almost 60 years ago) our neighbors using wooden eggs to "trick" their chicken hens.

"Elephant-Proof" Beehive Fences

Great article on the problem (elephants trampling crops) and the solution.

“[The elephants] are coming back into a world where there are so many more people,” ... “They are finding buildings, roads, schools and farms across their normal migration routes.

"And when elephants encounter farmland, crops get eaten and trampled, and the situation can turn deadly. Elephants often leave farms with spear and gunshot wounds. Each year a few dozen people and few dozen elephants die during nighttime raids."

"Out of 45 attempted farm invasions, over two years of monitoring, elephants made it through sections protected by thorn-bush barriers 31 times, but only one elephant — a very determined bull — broke through a section of beehive fencing."

"The beehive fences brought the farmers an added perk — extra income from honey sales."
