A check for $1 million from the estate of Juanita Spalding, Greensboro, was delivered at 5 p.m. yesterday. It is a partial distribution to allow the NC Zoo Society to acquire and protect land on behalf of its resident wildlife.
The wonderful, late donor described her intent to Zoo Director David Jones and me about a decade ago in her modest apartment near the Greensboro Arboretum.

Wow! Amazing the generosity.
Yes. The last $1 million check we received was about 23 months ago from the estate of the wonderful, late Dr. Anton Schindler, who also lived very modestly to leave more for wildlife and to remember "his Valerie" (another late, wonderful Dr. Schindler who sacrificed for native wildlife.
It's been amazing how many animal lives have been saved thanks to Dr. Schindler, his wife and the rehab center they so lovingly built.
Makes you wonder what kind of facility we would have save for generous people like these!
