Juma Update
NC Zoo senior staff mtg. notes on the Zoo's baby giraffe: "Since the baby has to
be introduced not only to the other giraffes but also to the zebras and
ostriches, it will
be several weeks before she will be on exhibit. A small team will work
on Giraffe Deck reopening and any changes in its operation. The
Giraffe holding area can only accommodate five giraffes, so Juma will be
leaving in Spring 2013."

That is sad news that we will not be able to watch her fully grow. Are there any plans to expand the holding barn so that we can accommodate a larger herd?
As that was the very first of the permanent exhibits, opened in late 1979, and as it was built to exhibit a specific number of giraffes, ostriches and zebras on 3 and 1/2 acres, i think that it, like "lion" and others, will "max out" at some point and move young on when they mature. (Breeding in these exhibits is often restricted to times when our Zoo knows there are willing host zoos.)
BTW, she will do a LOT of growing while she is still here.
It's not always simply a space issue. If you're breeding animals that are genetically valuable their offspring need to move somewhere else to continue breeding. Staying with mom and dad forever dosen't make sense.
Good point, Anon.
